Conceptualized in the minds of the Ecosystem Sensing Research Group at Imperial College London, Bugg is an intelligent, real-time eco acoustic monitoring device. It is one of the few real-time eco monitoring devices on the market, and is designed to receive power from an off-grid solar setup.

Deforestation is the clearing of forests for any number of reasons, agriculture, logging, urban expansions, and more. Reforestation is the process of planting trees where a forest once was. Afforestation, which is a lesser known process, is the act of building a forest where previously one didn’t exist.

Drones are on the rise, pun intended. From surveying landscapes to delivering packages, we are seeing them integrated into more roles in our daily lives. With these small unmanned aerial vehicles (sUAV) comes questions of privacy, and viability, but we aren’t here to talk about that. The Moth Family (totally not a mafia name) includes the AudioMoth, the HydroMoth, the MicroMoth (µMoth), and the AudioMoth USB Microphone. First created by Open Acoustic Devices, these little acoustic loggers have been deployed in caves to listen to bats, left in coral reefs to monitor population density, and rainforests to track human activities (like logging or poaching).

Coral reefs are beautiful, interesting, and incredibly important ecosystems. They occupy less than 1% of the ocean, yet are home to roughly 25% of the world’s marine life - over 4,000 species of fish.
